It was previously known as Sadhir Attam and is an Indian classical dance that originated in Tamil Nadu. Bharatnatyam is known for expressing Southern India’s religious beliefs and spiritual themes. These ideologies specifically include Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Shaktiism.

Bharatnatyam contains some types of banis. Bani, is a traditional term to describe dance method and style. This dance style is specific to the guru/school. These names are assigned according to the village of the guru or the teacher.

Bharatnatyam is popular for fixed upper torso, bent legs, and flexed knees. These poses are combined with footwork and sign language. This sign language consists of gestures with hands, eyes, and facial muscles. The dance accompanies the singer, music, and has specifically the teacher present during the rendition. This guru is called Nattuvanar, the director and conductor of the performance.
